Retouching old photos can be a challenge.
When it's just enhancing tones and contrast it's relatively uncomplicated.
It gets complicated when the original print is damaged by tearing and/or staining, as was the case with this old photo of the father of a friend.
It was easiest to make an oval frame that left a lot of the damage out of the finished picture, but there was still a lot of cloning work involved in removing the blemishes. There were areas where I needed to guess at content, and the background was done with a gradient fill having isolated the subject.
